As we know, 2022 has been a particularly difficult year for the automotive industry. After a year 2020 weighed down by the Covid-19 pandemic and a year 2021 marked by shortages of semiconductors and difficulties in production, we should not expect a miracle concerning sales in 2022.
The analysis firm AAA Data confirms this downward trend, with a total of 1.529 million new cars registered in France in 2022. This is the lowest level on record since 1974and compared to 2021, this represents a decline in sales of 7.1%.
2022, a good year for electric cars in France
Despite everything, all is not black since one sector has managed to hold its own. Indeed, electric cars are doing particularly well in France. In November 2022, one in five new cars was electric in France. In December 2022, EVs reached a record market share of 16%, compared to 14% for diesel.
“This dynamic is confirmed not only over the past month but also over the twelve months of the year, which have seen EV registrations increase by 25%, while those of diesels have fallen by an average of 32%”. adds AAA Data in its latest press release dedicated to the health of the French automotive market.

- Dacia Spring: 18,326 sales
- Tesla Model 3: 17,005 sales
- Renault Megane e-Tech: 15,580 sales
- Fiat 500e: 15,163 sales
- Renault Twingo: 12,655 sales
- Renault Zoe: 12,182 sales
- Tesla Model Y: 11,892 sales
- Peugeot e-2008: 7,174 sales
- Hyundai Kona: 6,522 sales
Recall that in 2021, the pole position was occupied by the Tesla Model 3, therefore relegated this year to 3rd place. Peugeot’s electric city car, the e-208, continued its excellent momentum, with an 8% increase in sales compared to 2021. For its part, the Dacia Spring continues to be a hit with individuals, as a car cheapest electricity on the market.
