The new car market started to rise again in August, an upturn that particularly benefits electric cars, French ones in addition, on a good dynamic.

For the first time in 15 months, the new car market started to rise again (+3.8%), even if it remains down (13.8%) since the start of the year, with 970,933 new vehicles registered to date, compared to 1,467,924 last year at the same period. The ranking of electric car sales, for its part, reports a market segment that continues to grow strongly (+24%), with French models that are popular.

Peugeot e-208 and Renault Megane E-Tech, the battle is on

Let’s be chauvinistic for a moment. Because yes, it is indeed the Peugeot e-208 which proudly occupies the lead in electric sales in 2022. This year, the vehicle found 11,982 registrations. The city car has found its audience, and yet!

Despite its good form, the e-208 was upstaged for the second consecutive month by its French competitor, the Renault Megane E-Tech. The electric sedan is certainly only seventh in electric car sales in 2022 with more than 6,257 copies, but it succeeded in its launch by having sold 3,500 units during the months of July and August.

In August, the Megane E-Tech took over ?

The Mégane E-Tech found 1,521 buyers in August in France, the e-208 only 891, during a very quiet month on the market as a whole.

In August, the Mégane even offered itself the luxury of being the best-selling C-segment car (which includes compact sedans) in France, all engines combined. Renault is smiling and can approach this return to school with confidence.

The electric vehicle is progressing in France, but remains behind diesel and gasoline cars

The e-208, which was close to the 12,000 registrations mark in 2022 at the end of August, is ahead of the electric Fiat 500 (11,185 units this year) and the Dacia Spring (10,852), which completes the podium. This is followed by the Renault Zoe (9,515), which recorded only 438 registrations in August, the Twingo E-Tech (9,315) and the Tesla Model 3.

The American car is relegated to sixth place in electric vehicle sales in France in August, with 702 registrations, for a total of 4,713 since the start of the year. The recent increase in prices for the Californian brand probably does not help.

In 2022, sales of electric vehicles will account for 12% market share in France, up from last year. Since the beginning of the year, more than 100,000 electric car registrations have been recorded in the country, which brings us closer to the 2021 record (162,106 registrations). Diesel (16% market share) and gasoline (38%) still have a clear lead, while hybrids are stable at 27%, while plug-in hybrids are losing ground (7%).
