Peugeot ends up listening to reason? The electric 308 sees its price drop after the controversy

Is Peugeot finally bowing to the controversy over the price of its electric 308 (e-308)? The French manufacturer is finally reviewing its pricing strategy and making its car eligible for the ecological bonus. Good news, but not enough to match the Tesla Model 3.

Updated article: Peugeot has just posted the press release for the launch of the new electric e-308. The opportunity to confirm the first deliveries, which will take place in September 2023. The standard equipment of this First Edition is well supplied since it is based on the GT finish. The other finishes to come will therefore be less expensive. We hope for a call price of around 40,000 euros.

Peugeot makes us dream… or not. After having drawn the wrath of the media and consumers for the price of its electric 308, the brand finally seems to have heard the criticisms (or at least the sarcasm) and is adjusting its price.

It must be said that the situation was, how to say… funny? The electric 308 (or e-308), with an introductory price of 48,000 euros for an over-equipped First Edition finish, was not even eligible for the ecological bonus of 5,000 euros, which applies to vehicles from a price of less than 47,000 euros including tax. But beware, here we reached the pinnacle of irony: if you placed an order on the Peugeot store on the web, the price was “discounted” at 47,040 euros. 41 euros too much to be eligible for the bonus. The strangest thing is that if you opted for a rental with option to buy (LOA) offer, you could benefit from the ecological bonus. Go figure…

Peugeot seems to have come to its senses

But good news, Peugeot seems to have come to its senses and now offers the electric 308 at a negotiated price of 46,990 euros, with three colors to choose from. The car is finally eligible for the ecological bonus of 5,000 euros (or even 7,000 euros depending on the household) without having to go to the dealership to discuss the price bitterly (even if we recommend it to you all the same).

The electric 308 therefore sees its price drop to 41,990 euros. So, sure, that doesn’t make it any more interesting than a Tesla Model 3, but it’s a step forward. Peugeot therefore reads the press and is capable of reacting. However, the catalog price has not changed: 48,000 euros.

Hopefully this case prompts Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares to reconsider his strategy. He said recently that the group did not have to worry about competition from Tesla, because its prices were much lower. Unfortunately for him, that statement doesn’t seem entirely accurate. Numerama Vroom has indeed revealed that for several finishes of the cars of the European group, the prices are actually higher than those of Tesla.
