Philippe Lacheau: “I can’t wait to show my films to my son”

The “brat kid” of French comedy presented Superheroes in spite of himself (in theaters since February 2) at the opening of the last Alpe d’Huez Festival. The opportunity to cook it on his humor.

Your film opened the last Alpe d’Huez Festival. A consecration?

Philippe Lacheau: Indeed, it all started for me in Alpe d’Huez eight years ago. It was my first time showing Baby sitting, and I was very stressed! The film won the Special Jury Prize and the Audience Prize, and that changed everything for me. Doing the opening this year is an incredible pride!

In your new comedy, we find your band: Julien Arruti, Tariq Boudali, Elodie Fontan. Is setting up a project without them inconceivable for you?

It’s as if I were offered to go on vacation without my friends! As long as people are not tired of seeing us reunited, we will continue. And we hope to laugh and make films together for a very long time.

Do you sometimes tell yourself that your schoolboy and transgressive humor goes too far?

I find that we don’t see this type of humor often enough in French comedies. I am aware of shocking with certain jokes, but I know that we cannot please everyone and that we do not all laugh at the same thing. So might as well do what amuses me, above all to stay honest with myself.

Do you think about when your son (Raphaël, 2 years old) will discover your films?

Sure ! I also thought about the age at which I can take it to a preview! I can’t wait to be able to introduce him to my world and see his reactions. If it is, he will find my films rotten. He will be ashamed of his father. (He’s laughing.)

Your parents make appearances in each of your films. Do they appreciate your humor?

When I showed them my sketches when I started, my father had a very critical eye while my mother thought everything was great. However, sometimes it was really bad! At the time, I had a hard time and had a lot of doubts. My father was an insurer and my mother a seamstress, so nothing to do with the world of cinema, which seemed so inaccessible to them. I had all my life this desire to prove to them that I could do it. Today, they are rather fans and proud of me.

You injected romance into your film for the first time. Are you comfortable with this registry?

Not really ! I have to work on the emotion. Luckily it’s me who does the editing and I can choose my takes because I feel that it’s not in this repertoire that I shine the most! (He’s laughing.)

new episodes of LOL: who laughs, comes out!, game you host, will soon be available on Amazon Prime Video. Tempted to make a series?

I was approached by platforms. But I’m so happy to make movies that I want to enjoy it a little more. And then I know it’s complicated for theater operators right now, with the pandemic. So I really don’t think it’s time to jump ship.
