At CES 2023, MediaTek announced a real invasion of its chips in Philips Oled televisions. All of the manufacturer’s 2023 models will indeed be equipped with Pentonic chips. To a lesser extent, Sony is also to announce models equipped with MediaTek Pentonic SoCs later this year.
Pentonic 2000, 1000 and 700. These are the three chip references that MediaTek should deploy in 2023 on a whole line of Philips and Sony televisions. Designed in collaboration with the American Portrait Display, a specialist in screen calibration, some of these chips will notably integrate all OLED televisions launched by Philips in 2023, and be installed on board at least some of the Sony TVs expected later this year. In the immediate future, however, the Japanese manufacturer is keeping its 2023 televisions secret, which still prevents us from knowing which models will be affected.
As for Philips, we know that the brand will mainly use Pentonic 1000 SoCs, the most suitable for 4K models with four HDMI 2.1 ports (Pentonic 2000s being designed for 8K models). At this stage, however, it is not known whether Philips will also install MediaTek chips in its 2023 vintage LCD references or only on its Oled televisions, underlines FlatPanelsHD.
MediaTek and Calman make their way to Philips and Sony
” All series of Philips Oled TVs launched in 2023 will achieve an exceptional level of high quality picture performance thanks to Calman Ready and MediaTek Pentonic 1000 commented Philips. Sony, for its part, is necessarily a little more evasive and insists instead on the prospects offered by its partnership with the MediaTek / Portrait Display tandem in terms of calibration.

In addition to Sony’s built-in image processing algorithms, our strategic collaboration with Portrait Displays and MediaTek allows us to take the viewing experience of our Smart TVs to the next level. It should be noted, however, that the use of MediaTek chips is not quite a first for Sony and Philips since the two brands already use them for some of their current models under Android TV and Google TV.
As for the partnership between MediaTek and Portrait Display, it will mainly benefit manufacturers, calibration specialists and users with the right equipment. They will indeed be able to connect directly to the Calman software in order to perform automated calibrations for SDR and HDR content. A good thing for Sony and Philips televisions, of course, but which should especially benefit the most advanced users.
