The new Philips OLED807 should shine with a more brilliant screen, refined design and better Ambilight. In addition, there is extensive equipment and a variety of connections that should make film fans just as happy as gamers. COMPUTER BILD reveals how Philips wants to achieve this in detail – and what the catch is in the whole story.

OLED-EX: Deuterium makes the picture brighter
At the center of the innovations of the Philips OLED807 is the screen. It was only at the beginning of 2022 that LG Display, still the only manufacturer of large OLED screens, presented the new OLED-EX technology. As a reminder: OLED screens compose the images from millions of tiny light-emitting diodes. They can be so small because organic substances are used instead of the crystalline material of conventional LEDs. For the new EX generation, LG Display mixed a new formula that uses deuterium instead of hydrogen. With this hydrogen variant (isotope), the organic phosphor is said to be more efficient and stable. Philips promises a whopping 30 percent higher maximum brightness. This would shrink the brightness advantage of high-quality LCD TVs to a level that is hardly relevant, while the OLED TVs can continue to point to the better contrast with better black display as an advantage.
Ambient Intelligence: the best picture day and night
Philips complements the OLED-EX screen with its in-house sixth-generation P5 processor for image processing. What is new is the so-called Ambient Intelligence: If desired, it not only adjusts the image brightness to the ambient light, but also the color temperature and tonal value progression. This is to ensure that the TV images can be seen in all their glory with natural colors and without loss of detail under all environmental conditions. Nice side effect: With the OLED-EX screens, the frame is even narrower than with previous OLED televisions such as the predecessor model Philips OLED806.
HDMI 2.1: Complete equipment for gamers
OLED televisions are also very popular with gamers. They also appreciate bright and high-contrast screens, with OLEDs the switching times of the individual pixels are also extremely short. Together with the refresh rate of 144 Hertz, which has been doubled to 120 Hertz, this results in sharp contours and streak-free playback even in fast movements. Philips is also equipping the new OLED807 with high-performance HDMI connections. Two of the four inputs accept 4K or UHD resolution according to HDMI 2.1 with up to 120 Hertz and variable frame rates (VRR) including AMD Freesync Premium.
Ambilight: Quadruple with higher resolution
And it doesn’t matter whether you’re a gamer, film lover or sports fan: the Philips OLED807 bathes the entire room in colored light to match the current TV picture. Compared to previous generations, Philips promises a more precise adjustment to the image thanks to refined control: previously, three LEDs were always grouped together in the four rows of LEDs on the back, but now they can all follow the image individually. The rest of the equipment includes the well-known Philips package with Android as the operating system for the full streaming program.
Philips OLED807: sizes, prices and availability
Philips offers the new OLED807 in three screen sizes. The 48OLED807 is the smallest 121 centimeters tall, the middle model 55OLED807 measures 140 centimeters and the 65OLED807 164 centimeters. Philips has not yet mentioned prices, which should start at about the level of the previous models – that would be 1,600, 2,000 and 3,000 euros. The catch in the whole story: The market launch is not planned until the middle of the year.
