Philips Screeneo UL5 Smart: the new ultra short throw video projector that breaks prices

Video projectors have shown good momentum in recent months, as shown by the launch of numerous models, such as the Dangbei Atom or the LG Cinebeam Q that we recently tested. It’s Screeneo’s turn to release its UL5 Smart under license from Philips with an attractive price.

A very compact ultra-short focal length

Unlike most picoprojectors or mini projectors, the UL5 Smart is an ultra-short throw model. A surprising choice, but interesting, because this type of product is generally bulky and rather high-end (see the Formovie Theater or the Hisense PL1 recently tested). Ultra-short throw video projectors have the advantage of being placed close to the projection surface (wall or screen) and are therefore easy to install, especially when space in the room is limited. We can thus enjoy a 100-inch image by placing the video projector 51 cm from the screen and the maximum size increases to 120 inches.

Philips announces full color space coverage, as well as HDR 10 compatibility, and the interface will work with LuminOS. We do not know which applications will be compatible, in particular Netflix, which is not always native on video projectors. We should in any case be able to benefit from automatic keystone correction, and connectivity rather provided with USB-C, USB-A, HDMI and of course wifi and Bluetooth.

A low price, but some concessions

The video projector is priced at only €700, much cheaper than most ultra-short throw models which generally exceed €2000. An attractive price which places it between the Mogo Pro 2 (€470) and the Dangbei Atom (€850) and their more classic focal length (these models are positioned approximately 2 m from the projection surface). Of course, Screeneo Innovation has made some concessions to display such a price: the definition is in full HD only, the brightness is limited to 550 lumens, and we can also only count on small 3 W speakers.
