The future range of processors Ryzen 7000 will be the first to support DDR5 RAM from AMD’s side.

A few weeks ago, Phison had already made a first demo of a PCI Express 5.0 SSD using its PS5026E26 controller, but last May, we had to settle for a hybrid platform using a riser connected to a PCI Express 16x port.

232-layer Micron TLC memory

Today, the brand is taking advantage of AMD’s Flash Memory 2022 summit to partner with the American. The two partners demonstrated an entirely “native” solution.

To do this, they used an AM5 motherboard, whose reference is unfortunately unknown, on which was installed a Ryzen 7000 series whose only known OPN code, “100-000000593-20_Y”.

A previous leak, however, told us that this code is used on the Ryzen 5 7600X, a 6-core processor based on the Zen 4 architecture and designed to put AMD ahead of Intel.

Up to 12 GB/s sequential read

Support for PCI Express 5.0 is one of the elements of this return to the front of the stage and, on the demonstration carried out by Phison, we see that the M.2 PCIe Gen 5 port is perfectly functional.

The SSD used for the occasion used for the first time the recent 232-layer TLC flash memory presented by Micron. According to the manufacturer, these new chips should boost write bandwidth.

Phison and Micron indicate that after some optimizations, the memory should make it possible to reach 2,000 MT/s whereas it is currently limited to 1,600 MT/s. On the demonstration carried out by Phison, we can also observe speeds of around 10 GB/s.

In the future, perhaps for the release of the AM5 platform and the Ryzen 7000s, the best PCIe Gen 5 SSDs should be able to climb up to 12 GB/s in reading and another 11 GB/s in writing. In addition, we are talking about 1.5 to 2 million random read/write IOPS.
