As Princess Eugenie announced on her Instagram account, June 26th was International Scoliosis Awareness Day. To highlight this pathology, the daughter of Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew shared her own experience. In her post, she published a photo of her back, on her wedding day where her dress reveals a large scar. She revealed in a second publication, on June 29, 2024: “My mother detected my scoliosis early and I was fortunate to get the help I needed at age 12.” In 2002, Beatrice of York’s sister had to undergo a major operation.
The young teenager then spent eight hours on the operating table at the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital in London. On the hospital website, Eugenie from York explained in more detail what she suffered. Surgeons had inserted titanium rods on each side of his spine, each 20 centimeters long, and screws almost 4 centimeters long in his neck. The princess had to spend three days in intensive care, then another week in a hospital ward. Because of the heavy operation, she could only move around in a wheelchair. After six days, the young princess was finally able to walk again. In addition to sharing her story, on June 30, 2018, still on Instagram, the niece of King Charles III shared x-rays of her back after the operation.
