Photo series: Caesarean section babies: A quick start into the world

The first birth that the French photographer Christian Berthelot witnessed was that of his own son. There were complications, so the child had to be brought into the world by caesarean section. "Parents can't see what's happening on the other side of the operating table," he told Slate.com. "So we waited and tried to imagine what would happen." When the doctors finally presented the boy, he was deeply impressed. "He looked like a fighter who had just won his first battle, like an angel from the ashes," Spiegel Online quotes.

The picture never left Berthelot. He decided to make a photo series about babies who are born by Caesarean section.
