This Sunday, February 25, the Berlinale 2024, launched on February 15, ended. Mexican-Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o, the first black personality to hold the position of president of the jury, caused a sensation on the red carpet in a magnificent golden dress on this closing day of the festival organized every year since 1951 in Berlin as its name indicates it. Saturday February 24, the jury crowned Franco-Senegalese actress Mati Diop with its coveted Golden Bear for her documentary entitled “Dahomey” on the often complicated question of the restitution by former colonial powers of works of art stolen in Africa.

“We can either forget the past, an unpleasant burden that prevents us from evolving, or we can take responsibility for it, use it to move forward”, declared the director upon receiving her prize, having, in particular, cited the Martinican intellectual Aimé Césaire. She added: “As a Franco-Senegalese, Afro-descendant filmmaker, I have chosen to be one of those who refuse to forget, who refuse amnesia as a method”. His documentary recounts the restitution, in 2021, in Benin of 26 works looted in 1892 by French colonial troops. The daughter of Senegalese musician Wasis Diop had already won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2019 for her film entitled “Atlantique”, the highest distinction after the Palme d’Or. To our colleagues at AFP, Mati Diop confided that she would like her film to be “seen in as many African countries as possible”and especially “in schools and universities”. With “Dahomey”Mati Diop succeeds Frenchman Nicolas Philibert, Golden Bear in 2023.

A Frenchman rewarded

The jury of the 74th Berlinale also awarded the prize for best performance to Romanian-American actor Sebastian Stan in “A Different Man”. As for the Grand Jury Prize, it was awarded to South Korean director Hong Sang-soo for a film with Isabelle Huppert entitled “A Traveller’s Needs”. The jury prize was awarded to Frenchman Bruno Dumont for his feature film called “The Empire”, released on February 21, 2024 in cinemas. Between Ma Loute and The Life of Jesus, between heaven and earth, Bruno Dumont offers us a caustic, cruel and crazy vision of Star Wars.can we read about the film on Allocinated. This feature film has already been talked about since the actress Adèle Haenel explained why she chose to refuse a role in The Empire.

To a German newspaper, the 35-year-old actress explained, according to our colleagues at Telerama : “It was a dark, sexist and racist world that was defended. The script was full of jokes about cancel culture and sexual violence. I sought to discuss it with Bruno Dumont, because I thought a dialogue was possible . I wanted to believe for the umpteenth time that it’s not intentional. But it is intentional […]. I didn’t want to support that, so I canceled my participation.” Questioned, this time, by our colleagues from Allociné, the actress provided more details. “After a year, I received the new script where not a single line had been changed, which is why I left the project. There are several people who can attest to this,” she assured.
