Physint: “I realized people were dying”, Hideo Kojima explains why he returns to spy games

Known for the action, stealth and spy game franchise Metal Gear SolidHideo Kojima now has his own studio far from Konami. Kojima Productions only launched Death Strandingbut he is developing a sequel, the exclusive horror game Xbox OD and now Physint, a new action-espionage game in a new franchise. A return to his first loves which is already delighting fans of MGS.

These three games are covered in a recent video, HideoTubein which Kojima notably returns to his desire to return to spy games. A desire motivated by age and healththe Japanese designer will soon celebrate his 40th career and has visibly become aware of his inevitable end one day or another, he therefore wants to please himself first, and above all to please the players. Hideo Kojima says:

I became independent, I wanted to do something new with my own license. So, to challenge myself, I first created Death Stranding. Then, to create a franchise, I made Death Stranding 2: On The Beach. I wanted to do something even more innovative, so I started working on OD. Since then, there have been many new ideas.

But over the past eight years, every day on social media, from users all over the world, people asked me to create another Metal Gear and stuff like that.

Then I got sick in 2020. It was during the pandemic, so I was sick and isolated during that time. I even had surgery. I thought, “I can’t take this anymore.” I was at my lowest point and felt like I couldn’t start making games again. I also wrote a will. At that moment, I realized that people were dying. But, I turned 60 last year. I will be 70 in ten years. I hope I never retire. That said, if users want it so much, I thought I should change my priorities a bit. I always want to do new things, but I decided to make an action-espionage game.

I get a lot of requests from Hollywood to make films, but I turn them down. Because I have my own company now, I can’t leave for a year or two to make a film. Society would collapse. I was in a difficult situation. I spoke to Guillermo del Toro about it. He said, “Hideo, what you are doing is already a movie. Continue as you are.” His words saved me. As we will be working with many creators in the industry, even if the result is a game, it will not be too different from films.

Even if Hideo Kojima has always been very influenced by the seventh art, Physint as a reminder, wants to blur the line between cinema and video games. The designer says it will indeed be a real game, but “if your mother comes in and sees you playing this game, she will think you are watching a movie”. Failing to fully launch into the world of cinema, the Japanese designer will therefore continue to mix the two media, to the delight of his fans.

Aware of his age, Hideo Kojima is actively working on Death Stranding 2: On the Beachwhich is not expected before 2025, then he will really tackle Physint after the release of this sequelundoubtedly developing in parallel OD. Suffice to say that the spy game is not ready to arrive.
