Now is the best time of year for delicious, fresh fruit. The best part? You don’t even have to pay for it, wild fruit trees, shrubs and herbs can be found almost everywhere. With the interactive map from Mundraub you can see where you can find fresh raspberries, cherries, apples and much more in your area and where you can simply take them with you.
Mundraub: Harvest the fruit yourself
There are millions of fruit trees in Germany that bear delicious fruit – and not all of them are privately owned. These include cherry trees that have been planted along roads, or apple trees that are supposed to make parks more beautiful. Berry bushes can also be found in many different places, for example wild blueberries or strawberries in the forest. But where exactly, only a few know.
Exactly this location information is shared by the enthusiasts of the mundraub.org network with all members. This creates a detailed, interactive map that shows many wild plants that every fruit and vegetable fan can pick. In addition, Mundraub offers a harvest calendar in PDF format, in which 24 plants and the respective harvest months are listed.
Those who take part in this campaign also make a contribution to the environment, because they do without plastic-packaged fruit from the discounter.
Several tens of thousands of localities are entered on the interactive map. If you zoom in on a location on the map, you can use a pictogram to see exactly what kind of plant it is. A distinction is made between fruit trees, shrubs, herbs and nuts. A click on the respective locality opens a short description, often including photos. For example, you can find out here that cherry plums grow on Burgunderplatz in Braunschweig.
In addition to finding healthy treats, the social aspect that Mundraub pursues is also exciting. The online platform wants to bring people together and let them experience nature together through harvesting, planting and care campaigns as well as discovery tours. In Berlin, for example, so-called birth trees are planted from time to time. This is a fruit tree that is planted on the occasion of a birth and in consultation with the authorities, together with a plaque with the child’s name. You can also find out more about the various promotions on the Mundraub website.
However, those who use the card should be careful to treat nature with care. Be careful not to trample plants and only harvest what you really need. And if a registered tree is privately owned, you should refrain from harvesting it or at least ask beforehand.
Harvest calendar: When do apple trees bloom, when can raspberries be harvested?
A useful helper for harvesting wild plants is the harvest calendar in PDF format. Here you can find out in which months fruits & co. are ripe. For the months of June and July, for example, these are mainly currants, cherries, raspberries and elderberries.
