After the gigantic eruption of the submarine volcano Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai in the South Seas, large parts of the island kingdom of Tonga are further cut off from the outside world. Buried under a thick layer of ash, the capital Nuku’alofa looks like a lunar landscape – pale and gray instead of rich and green. It is still not possible to fully assess the extent of the natural disaster. It is also unclear whether there are dead or injured. The west coast of the main island of Tongatapu, where many holiday hotels are located, is badly affected.
