DSV jumpers deliver bankruptcies, bad luck and mishaps

Just two days after the Four Hills Tournament, the ski jumpers have to work again. And the short break is not good for the German team. Karl Geiger and colleagues experience a bitter afternoon in Bischofshofen. The good news: After all, nobody was injured.

First a fall, then flights that were too short and at the end a disqualification: the German ski jumpers had a real breakdown day two days after the end of the 70th Four Hills Tournament. Karl Geiger landed in Bischofshofen in eighth place after two jumps of 132 meters each, making him the best German. His buddy Markus Eisenbichler jumped incorrectly at first and was then disqualified because of his non-compliant suit. Severin Freund had previously fallen in the first round.

“Unfortunately a used day, but it has been announced,” commented Germany’s last tour winner Sven Hannawald in the ARD with a view to the high stress of the past two weeks. Geiger summed up: “It was a difficult day. The jumps were okay, but the over grenade wasn’t there now.” Other nations seemed to have put up better with the exhausting traditional event around the turn of the year. Tour second Marius Lindvik from Norway (133.5 and 139 meters) won ahead of compatriot Halvor Egner Granerud and Austria’s Jan Hörl on the huge jumping facility in Pongau. Tour winner Ryoyu Kobayashi (135 and 133.5 meters) from Japan did not get above fourth place this time. From the German team, only Geiger made it into the top ten. Andreas Wellinger finished 19th and sees himself “on the right track”.

“Damn stupid”

This cannot be said for the German team just four weeks before the start of the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing (February 4th to 20th). Geiger’s dominance from before Christmas is gone, and the team spirit is no longer as great as at the beginning of the season. For the team competition on Sunday (4 p.m. / ARD and Eurosport), the Germans are only outsiders in contrast to the increasingly stronger hosts from Austria and Norway.

Team world champion Freund is unlikely to be a candidate for the quartet. After jumping 128 meters, the 33-year-old landed normally, but then fell in the run at high speed. “It feels like I’ve already been in telemark, the next moment I’ll be lying down,” said Freund, who also cost him a participation in the second round of the competition after the fall. Freund could not name the reason for the fall. “It’s stupid as hell.” Physically, the 2014 Olympic champion is doing fine. “Should everything fit. I hope that there won’t be any bruises. As far as nothing I would notice now,” said Freund on ARD. The Lower Bavarian only joined the German World Cup team for the Four Hills Tournament and is fighting for an Olympic place.
