Pink Floyd are reportedly selling the rights to their name and music recordings for $400 million.
Pink Floyd have reportedly agreed with Sony to sell their music catalog and name for around $400 million (around €363 million). As the “Financial Times” reports, the British rock band does not want to sell the rights to their songwriting.
Interview statements caused problems
There are said to have been arguments between the band members in recent years over the details of the sale. “Variety” had already reported in 2022that Pink Floyd wanted to sell their music recordings and other assets for up to 500 million dollars (around 453 million euros). Insiders told the US industry portal at the time that some potential buyers were put off by comments from Roger Waters (81). The co-founder of Pink Floyd had made controversial statements about Israel, Ukraine and Russia, among other things.
Now the deal has apparently come about anyway. According to Variety, Pink Floyd’s music catalog – the band was founded in 1965 – is one of the most valuable in contemporary music. The group’s most famous albums include “The Wall”, “The Dark Side of the Moon”, “Wish You Were Here” and “Animals”.
Many musicians sell their music
In recent years, other prominent bands and artists such as Bruce Springsteen (75), Bob Dylan (83) and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers have also sold their music catalogs to various music labels. It was recently reported that Sony was in talks to also secure the catalog of the British rock band Queen. Like “Variety” citing insiders reported that the cult group’s music catalog, which includes big global hits like “We Are The Champions” and “We Will Rock You”, could apparently receive the equivalent of over a billion euros.
