Mourning in Hollywood: Piper Laurie dies at 91. The actress was nominated for an Oscar three times.
Hollywood mourns Piper Laurie (1932-2023): The US actress, who was nominated for an Oscar three times, died at her home in Los Angeles on Saturday (October 14), according to US media reports. She was 91 years old.
Laurie was known for her appearances in “Sharks of the Big City”, “Carrie – Satan’s Youngest Daughter” and “Twin Peaks”. The actress had not been feeling well for some time, her spokesperson Marion Rosenberg told The Hollywood Reporter.
Film career started in the 50s
Piper Laurie came to Hollywood in 1949 and landed a number of leading roles, including alongside Ronald Reagan (1911-2004), Rock Hudson (1925-1985) and Tony Curtis (1925-2010). Over the course of her career, she received Oscar nominations for the films “Sharks of the Big City” from 1961, the film adaptation of Stephen King’s (76) horror classic “Carrie” from 1976 and the romantic drama “God’s Forgotten Children” from 1986.
Piper Laurie has also been celebrated for her roles on television and on stage, including her appearance in David Lynch’s (77) series “Twin Peaks” in the 1990s, in which she played the scheming Catherine Martell. Laurie was last seen in “White Boy Rick” (2018) with Matthew McConaughey (53), Jennifer Jason Leigh (61) and Rory Cochrane (51) as the grandmother of an FBI informant who became a drug dealer.
Piper Laurie leaves behind a daughter
Laurie was married to the film critic Joe Morgenstern (91). Before that, she was also said to have had a romance with Ronald Reagan. She married Morgenstern in 1962. The couple has a daughter together, Anne Grace Morgenstern (52). They divorced in 1982, after which the actress moved to the Hollywood area and continued to work in film and television.
