Pixel 4a: This is what the new Google smartphone has to offer

Google has launched its new Pixel 4a smartphone. The device has a lot to offer – and at a competitive price of less than 350 euros.

While the top models of some manufacturers like to continue to cost more than 1,000 euros depending on the version, most users know that there are excellent smartphones at significantly lower prices. On August 3rd, Google has now presented its new Pixel 4a, which is to be released at an absolute competitive price of 349 euros – with the current value-added tax cut just under 340 euros. The smartphone can be pre-ordered from September 10th and will be available online from October 1st or from Saturn, MediaMarkt, Vodafone, o2 and mobilcom-debitel.

Light and durable

In the 144 x 69.4 x 8.2 millimeter housing, in addition to a borderless 5.81-inch OLED display with HDR support, there are six gigabytes of RAM, 128 gigabytes of internal memory and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 64-bit eight-core processor , a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a battery with 3,080 mAh. Thanks to the quick charge function, the latter is not only quickly refilled, but can also last up to 24 hours, depending on use, according to the manufacturer. Among other things, this should be achieved by restricting the battery usage of less frequently used or less important apps.

The device, which comes in a matte black finish and is elegant as usual, should not only fit comfortably in the hand thanks to its low weight of just under 143 grams. The 12.2-megapixel camera on the back and an 8-megapixel front camera are said to also enable photos to be taken that are qualitatively similar to those of professionals. The same rear camera as the Pixel 4 is installed, features such as HDR + with double exposure and a night vision and portrait mode are offered.

Unlimited space for photos

Meanwhile, the well-known "Titan M" chip, which takes care of passwords and transactions, for example, ensures adequate security. Of course, the Google Assistant is also on board again, as is the option to save photos and videos to Google Photos indefinitely. In addition, the purchase of the smartphone includes, among other things, a three-month trial access to YouTube Premium and the gaming subscription service Google Play Pass.

In addition to the smartphone, fabric protective covers are also to appear in three different colors. For autumn, Google has also announced the launch of two more cellphones: a 5G variant of the Pixel 4a, which will cost 499 euros – with a VAT reduction of just under 486 euros – and the Pixel 5, which will also support the new 5G standard. In addition to Germany, the devices will also be released in the USA, Great Britain, Canada, France, Australia, Japan, Ireland and Taiwan. Google will publish further details in the coming months.
