Google apparently continues to believe in the foldable smartphone market. Photos of a Pixel Fold 2 prototype have just emerged on the web.

The first Pixel Fold wasn’t exactly an absolute success, with owners complaining about numerous screen and construction issues, but that didn’t cool Google. As previous rumors seemed to indicate, the search giant will launch a Pixel Fold 2 in the coming months, and an image has already landed on the web.

Significant design changes

The Android Authority site has actually obtained a snapshot of the future phone, or at least an advanced prototype. From what we can see in the photo, Google has opted for a fairly radical design change for this new model, just like for the future Pixel 9s.

First of all, the Pixel Fold 2 seems narrower and taller than its predecessor. From what we can see of the mobile, the dimensions are closer to a OnePlus Open or a Galaxy Z Fold. The interior screen would have a ratio closer to the square than the rectangle of the previous generation. This technical choice would have been made to prevent applications from being launched in tablet format as Android actually suffers from the lack of applications optimized for large screens.

As with the Pixel 9, Google seems to want to get rid of the “photo strip” that was featured on its Pixels to replace it with a more classic “island” with all the onboard photo equipment. It seems that Google’s future mobile phone will also have 4 sensors. The wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and periscopic zoom trio seems to be there, but we know nothing about the last sensor. It could be a temperature sensor like on the Pixel 8 Pro or a module dedicated to depth capture.

A product still far from finished

Construction-wise, it seems that the Pixel Fold 2 will choose an aluminum frame and a design with more rounded edges. The source who spoke to Android Authority describes the product as “close to the first Pixel in terms of hand feel“. A notch housing the photo module should be visible on the interior screen and the fold appears “still quite visible» according to feedback collected by Android Authority

It should be noted that this phone will not be released for at least several months, so certain aspects of the design could still change. If the mobile should broadly resemble what we can see today, the finish and certain aesthetic choices could evolve.
