Pixel Watch: This is Google’s first smartwatch

The announcement of the Pixel Watch at Google I/O 2022 was probably no longer a big surprise for most, because some information and even a prototype had already appeared in advance. Nevertheless, the presentation was something special, because the Pixel Watch is Google’s first in-house smartwatch. Unfortunately, Google is still reluctant to provide any details, but the internet giant has revealed a few things in order to be able to better assess the watch.

Visually, the Pixel Watch is based on a classic, rather elegant watch with a bezel. The bracelets can be changed, but like many competitors, Google uses a proprietary connection.

The system (Wear OS) should work even more smoothly and also offer some Fitbit sports functions, such as sleep analysis, a heart rate monitor and monitoring of active minutes. The user should also be able to set personal goals. However, Google does not reveal much more about the integration. It should come as no surprise that the Pixel Watch gets Fitbit features at all, because Fitbit has been part of the Google universe since 2021.

It is also interesting that the Pixel Watch gets navigation functions that are independent of the smartphone. However, Google left open whether an LTE variant is meant here or whether one can work with locally stored data. However, we assume that a data connection will be necessary.

Other announcements include Google Wallet for contactless payments and a new Google Home app to control smart home devices, for example. Google Assistant (voice control) is also included. Google is still holding back technical details, such as the battery, memory, resolution and the built-in processor.

price and appraisal

Google has not yet given a specific price, and the exact start of sales is also open. What we do know so far is that the Pixel Watch is slated for a fall release.

However, the Pixel Watch will not have it easy because the competition is tough. The Apple Watch is currently setting the tone. But there are already really good smartwatches in the Android camp, above all the Samsung Galaxy Watch. We are therefore curious to see whether Google will go beyond what is already there and give the smartphone market another push, or whether the Pixel Watch will be integrated more seamlessly into the previous smartwatch world. In any case, the first morsels of information whet your appetite for more.
