Equivalent living conditions in Germany are already laid down in the Basic Law. In many regions with poor transport connections and a barely functional internet, however, there is not much of this to be felt. Green candidate Baerbock wants to change that with a five-point plan.

In order to create equal living conditions in Germany, the Chancellor candidate of the Greens, Annalena Baerbock, suggests an amendment to the Basic Law, according to a report. “I would like to make the commitment to equal living conditions throughout Germany a leitmotif of the next federal government,” writes Baerbock in a five-point plan from which the newspapers of the Funke media group report. As a central step, “regional services of general interest” should be included in the Basic Law as a new joint task.

“When the hospital closes, the connection to local public transport is gone and the internet connection keeps failing, then trust in the state crumbles.” The commitment to comprehensive services of general interest and equal living conditions is therefore a joint task for all of Germany. According to the newspapers, the Greens leader wants to advance the network expansion for fast Internet, promote the establishment of community health centers and hospitals are to be financed “not only according to the number of cases, but also according to their social mandate”.

In addition, Baerbock is committed to reliable transport connections in structurally weaker regions. “We want to reactivate a large number of closed connections to the rail network in rural areas and expand rail traffic.” Better financing of the municipalities is essential for the candidate for chancellor, it continues. “Regions with major supply problems must be able to invest again – in climate protection, the traffic transition, cultural and youth facilities.” This includes fair support from the federal government for old municipal debts and for corona-related tax losses in the municipalities.
