Plane crashes into fence and breaks up on landing in Somalia

Accident when an Embraer EMB-120 landed at the airport in the Somali capital Mogadishu: The plane crashed into a fence and broke up. The passengers escaped with minor injuries.

The recording is grainy and a bit blurred. But in the video you can see how a plane – apparently on the runway – approaches, touches the ground with the left wing, the wing breaks in the middle, the plane turns 180 degrees and hits a low wall with a fence on it cracks.

When the dust settles, it is revealed that it is a Halla Airlines plane. The fuselage is broken behind the cockpit and a person climbs out. The video was published by the renowned Somali journalist Harun Maruf.

Embraer EMB-120 in fence – all occupants survive with minor injuries

The Somali aviation authority confirms that on Tuesday (July 12) at 12:23 p.m. local time, the plane crashed on landing at Mogadishu Airport. It is an Embraer EMB-120 of the Somali Halla Airlines, registration number 6O-AAD.

“The aircraft had a total of 34 crew members and passengers on board,” the agency said. All survived with only minor injuries. According to media reports, the machine is said to have flown from Garowe in the north-east of the country to Mogadishu.

Reason for accident not yet known

Little is known about Halla Airlines. The aeronautical data portal CH Aviation lists an Embraer EMB-120 as a fleet, but not the 6O-AAD that crashed, but the 6O-AAB, as well as a Boeing 737-200 under wet lease. The airline does not provide any information about the fleet on its website and under “Popular Destinations” you will only find offers from the years 2021/2022.

Nothing is known about the cause of the accident. The aviation authority refers to the pending investigation.
