Planning fails completely – no more traffic jam chaos!

If you are driving in the city, it currently takes much longer. The many construction sites mean daily traffic jams and trouble. The plan failed completely this year.

Too many construction sites at once, strategically poorly placed, and a horrible traffic light – and as if that weren’t bad enough: Not only is there hardly anything going on on the streets every day, Vienna’s public transport is also affected by several closures. This poorly managed mix is currently turning Vienna into a large parking lot. And these are the biggest traffic jams on the road: the blocking of two lanes on Franz-Josefs-Kai from the Augartenbrücke temporarily causes the columns to stand back as far as the Friedensbrücke or even further. Around Praterstraße, Aspernbrücke and Untere Donaustraße, a lot more time has to be planned, especially in the morning but also in the afternoon. There are massive traffic jams here every day. The closure of the right-turn lane on Heiligenstädter Straße in the Liechtenwerder Platz area (extension of the Gurtel) leads to daily traffic jams on the Inner Gurtel up to the AKH, sometimes even as far as Lazarettgasse. The west exit is closed from tonight. The final construction site regulation, namely the oncoming traffic area, was set up. Traffic leaving the city will be diverted from the Hütteldorfer Bridge for twelve months via the western entrance area. The route remains open in both directions. There are two lanes in each direction of travel. Due to the closure of Währinger Straße in the area of the Volksoper, Gentzgasse in the area of Weimarer Straße and the closure of one lane on Billrothstraße, a considerable time cushion must be allowed for, especially in the early morning traffic towards the city centre. Also on the “standard traffic jams” of the south-east bypass (A23), Donauufer-Autobahn (A22) and on the sections of the inner belt between Mariahilfer Strasse and Josefstädter Strasse, which has two lanes, there is still no sign of less traffic due to the holiday season. Traffic jams are also the order of the day here. ÖAMTC chief lawyer Martin Hoffer calls for an optimization of the traffic light phases. Some large-scale diversions could work so much better. This would at least relieve some of the traffic. And next year think more about the planning!
