Plans at the Fernpass – “The strategy is going in completely the wrong direction!”

The transit forum around Fritz Gurgiser is massively critical of the country’s approach to long-distance passports. An environmental impact and suitability assessment is required, it is demanded.

“It will be true that something is happening at the Fernpass, as the state government is now suggesting at every opportunity. But unfortunately this is going in completely the wrong direction. It’s not just me saying that, but our members along the route,” says Fritz Gurgiser from the Transitforum Austria-Tirol and Xunds Leben. He also criticizes the Fernpass life cycle assessment study from 2023 commissioned by the state: “This refers to global and regional environmental impacts, but does not address local environmental impacts such as noise and social impacts for residents. This life cycle assessment study can therefore in no way be seen as a replacement for an environmental impact assessment or a suitability assessment.” This can be read in the study, by the way, but is kept secret. Gurgiser calls for a quick rethink. For Gurgiser and his colleagues it is very clear: the path that has now been taken will bring even more traffic , even more burdens due to block handling, additional, massive disruptions for emergency services organizations, commuters, local suppliers and local businesses in all sectors. “But also massive personal restrictions on more and more weekends with regard to family, friends and acquaintances visits as well as massive restrictions on personal freedom,” warns Gurgiser and calls for a quick rethink. On Wednesday, March 13th, the Reutte Chamber of Commerce will take place An information event will be held at 7:30 p.m.
