Plastic recycling – New collection system to standardize plastic disposal – News

  • The Swiss Recycling association has announced a national collection and recycling system for the coming year.
  • The initiative is supported by the four largest retailers in Switzerland and over 50 food and packaging manufacturers, as the “NZZ am Sonntag” writes.
  • Today, plastic collections are only offered by a few shops – or occasionally locally, for example with plastic collection bags that are subject to a fee.

PET bottles can be recycled throughout Switzerland – but this is not so easy for many other plastic packaging or other plastics. That is about to change: the association Swiss Recycling wants to introduce a national collection and recycling system in the coming year. The nationwide plastic collection is scheduled to start in 2023. The exact date is not yet known.

Only recyclable plastic by 2030

According to the “NZZ am Sonntag” report, the costs are still being haggled behind the scenes. In addition to financial questions, technical problems also had to be solved.

Today, only half of the plastic collected can be recycled. According to an EU requirement, it must be 100 percent by 2030.
