At least four people were killed and more than twenty injured when part of a building collapsed in the Playa de Palma holiday resort in Palma de Mallorca.
According to rescue workers, the collapse occurred around 8:30 p.m. at the Medusa Beach Club.
The terrace of the two-story restaurant collapsed for reasons that are still unclear.
Several firefighters, Palma police officers and ambulances were on site, local media reported. According to rescue workers, people could still be trapped in the rubble.
The Medusa Beach Club is a well-known and popular tourist restaurant on the beach promenade of Playa de Palma. It extends over two floors, the ground floor and a terrace on the first floor, which, according to initial reports, collapsed and caused the premises to collapse. The newspaper “El País” reports, citing eyewitnesses, that the first floor collapsed down to the basement. At first it was assumed that the roof of the building had collapsed.
