players scammed, Steam cleans up!

Lately on Steam, Helldivers 2 seems to have strangely multiplied. These were obviously scams, which fortunately did not last long.

The success that Helldivers 2 was on PC and PS5 indeed seems to have given ideas to unscrupulous people. A few independent games have recently turned into copies of the game. This has naturally caused confusion on Steam. Fortunately, the deception was only short-lived.

The democracy of Helldivers 2 flouted by scams

When Steam players discovered that Helldivers 2 could be obtained for 13 or 20 euros, many wondered. The news then spread like an orbital bombardment on social networks. It must be said that, given the success of the game, it seemed unlikely that it would already be the subject of promotions. The reality was of course quite different: these were nothing but pure scams.

The two “copies” of Helldivers 2 were in fact already existing independent games. The two titles also appear to have been developed by the same person. This took the deception to the end by changing their metadata. From the image of the game to its description or even the name of the studio and the publisher, the illusion could have been perfect. Unfortunately, the scammer had not thought of something important. The laughable number of evaluations of these two clones has thus alerted Steam.

Steam cleans up to avoid another The Day Before

The two fake games were thus delisted after only a few hours from the Valve platform. The pot-aux-roses was quickly discovered. They were actually Figurality and Do Not Smile. The two games were supposedly from SoleOnBoard Studio and Whitehole Games respectively. However, they both came out on the exact same day. This suggests the initiative of one and the same person.

However, we can ask ourselves the question of how this deception could have been carried out. The developer should not have been able to change the metadata of his games. Regardless, Steam clearly wanted to avoid another The Day Before-style drama. And more particularly the fact of having to reimburse many angry players. Despite its stability problems, Helldivers 2 is indeed one of the big successes of the start of the year. Several users could have fallen into the trap.

Speaking of the success of Arrowhead’s game, it should soon move into high gear. Once urgent fixes are deployed, new features like mechas should arrive soon. The Helldivers could really use some new toys to make the enemies of democracy taste free tea.
