PlayStation 5 Pro: get ready to stay on Zen 2!

According to certain sources, Sony is in the process of preparing a Pro version of its PS5. This would once again feature a Zen 2 processor, while gaining performance in terms of memory and the custom GPU. Not enough to make a huge gap, but to offer an optimized experience.

For a long time, manufacturers were content to optimize their consoles, by renewing certain components, reducing the size of the hardware, and correcting certain defects of the original models.

But since the PS4/Xbox One generation, console manufacturers have chosen, mid-generation, to offer more powerful models. Naturally, we expect the PS5/Xbox Series generation to do the same.

A timid development?

Rumors around the PS5 Pro and a PS5 Slim began shortly after the release of the original model, and were reinforced by global stock shortages. They recently made a comeback, and were partly confirmed by the announcement of a new model, which allows Sony’s console to become lighter and reduce its size by 30% while remaining at the same price. Dedicated to replacing the pre-existing model on the shelves, it is presented as a new version, and not a “slim” model renewing the design as previously imagined.

Recently, RedGamingTech announced on X.com (Twitter) that new information had been discovered for a possible PS5 Pro. According to this information, the PS5 Pro would be powered by a processor still running on a Zen 2 architecture, with eight x86-64 cores. Very close to the Oberon Plus of the PS5 currently on sale, this processor would run at a slightly higher frequency, going from 3.5 to 4 GHz. Where things would change is at the GPU level, which would abandon the RDNA 2 architecture clocked at 2.23 GHz for RDNA 3, with a frequency between 2.5 and 2.8 GHz and 60 computing units.

We could therefore see an increase in performance, especially since this pro model would upgrade to GDDR6 18000 MT/s on the memory side. We quickly move on to the idea of ​​a Tempest Engine that is “twice as efficient” in terms of audio, because that doesn’t mean much as it stands. These rumors therefore suggest a console which will not offer a huge gap, but a substantial optimization of the experience. Unfortunately, all this must be taken with a grain of salt, Sony having announced absolutely nothing in this area.

PlayStation 5: quiet strength

Launched in November 2020 during a year marked by the pandemic and confinements, the PS5 immediately established itself, despite stock shortages. Supply problems persisted for almost two years, but nothing seems to stop Sony and its competitors from producing their machines. As of this writing, more than 41.7 million units have been sold worldwide. The console is following in the footsteps of the PS4 and seems set to experience the same success, even if the PS4 refuses to retire.

The PS5 will soon be able to count on its new model, also equipped with a retractable Blu-Ray player that can be purchased separately. At the same time, remember that the Access Controller, allowing players with disabilities to properly enjoy the console, will arrive on December 6, and that a remote player, the PlayStation Portal, will be released on November 15. Let’s also not forget the PSVR2, the new model of the brand’s virtual reality headset.

It remains to be seen whether or not the departure of Jim Ryan, current CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, will lead to a change in philosophy. Until a replacement is found, Hiroki Totoki is acting. If he has been criticized for his commercial strategy causing a rise in prices, Jim Ryan’s record as a manager is very good: the PlayStation group has never done so well.
