A feature that had not been communicated by Sony was discovered regarding the removable Blu-Ray drive of the PS5 Slim.

In addition to the fact that a connection is required to use the Blu-Ray player the first time, this item sold separately for the sum of 119.99 euros has definitely hidden its game well. YouTuber TronicsFix has indeed indicated that it can be reused on different consoles, precisely by going through this connection step again.

A detachable and reusable Blu-Ray player

While the new design of the PS5 is popular here, it is already available in other regions of the world, as evidenced by various unboxings of the PS5 Slim. TronicsFix took the opportunity to present in video a discovery feature concerning the detachable Blu-Ray player. As a reminder, this can only be attached to a digital version of the PS5 Slim, which does not natively have such a reader.

It is revealed that this accessory can be used on other consoles of the same ilk, provided you go through the registration step via internet connection. On paper, the 100% digital model appeared less interesting than the standard, inevitably costing more when including the reader sold as an option. In any case, this is an argument in its favor… even if a potential fishery looms.

A preservation problem for the reader?

In addition to this discovery by TronicsFix, it has in fact been established since the deployment of the PS5 Slim that the reader presents a size problem. The first connection with internet authentication required at the first installation also applies when returning to the factory settings of the console.

If one day, hopefully in the distant future, this authentication server were to disappear, this means that the removable Blu-Ray drive would then become completely obsolete. A point which therefore fuels the problem of preservation in the field of video games.

Especially since, ultimately, the PS5 Slim will purely and simply replace the original model released in 2020. However, Sony could come up with a parade in this direction before such a thing happens. In the much nearer future, Europe is still waiting to know when this famous new version of the Japanese giant’s console will arrive…
