There are first indications that Sony is about to buy video game legend Hideo Kojima’s development studio and thus officially integrate it into the PlayStation family. We’ll tell you what the clues are and how likely this studio takeover is.
Sony to buy Hideo Kojima’s studio?
The year 2022 will likely be as the year of the studio takeovers go down in video game history. Not a month goes by without a developer studio being bought or at least rumours, if not rumours concrete hints on it.
It’s brand new and quite suspicious a change to the PlayStation website. There, a character in the banner was exchanged quite inconspicuously. This small but nice change was recorded by Joe Miller on Twitter:
Instead of seeing the hero from the indie hit Concrete Genie on the banner, you now see Death Stranding protagonist Sam Porter Bridges alongside Kratos and Aloy.
So is that an unofficial confirmation for Kojima Productions being bought out by Sony? In line with this assumption, Kojima recently announced on Twitter that his studio is moving. Where or why is still unclear. So is there a connection?
Sony x Kojima: how likely is the takeover?
A takeover would not really come as a surprise. Sony and Kojima share a common history. Developed by Kojima, Metal Gear Solid is a PlayStation classic and, in general, the Metal Gear series has long been a flagship for Sony’s console.
Even if it happens again and again over the years small detours to other platforms For example, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes appeared on the GameCube, and Metal Gear Solid 3 also received an adapted spin-off on the Nintendo 3DS.
Such a takeover would be particularly interesting for horror fans in particular. After all, Kojima might still be able to realize his vision of Silent Hills this way.
The game was released years ago as a PT on the PlayStation Store and was later revealed as a new Silent Hill. However, the promising horror game became obsolete due to an unpleasant dispute with Konami finally crushed.
