PlayStation Plus: Sony claims canceled discounts were just a bug

Sony announced that the reductions canceled when we changed formula with the PlayStation Plus were only a mistake. It is now corrected.

The redesigned PlayStation Plus is already available in select Asian countries. And the launch was not really smooth: thus, the users concerned paid the broken pots, in particular with reductions canceled in the event of passage from one formula to another. In a tweet posted on May 25, 2022Sony announced that it was a mistake.

Due to a technical error, players in Asia who had previously purchased a PlayStation Plus membership at a discounted price had to pay more to upgrade. This error has been corrected and the people concerned will receive credit. We thank you for your patience “, explains the multinational. Strangely, these tweets shared on May 25 prove that Sony first assumed the cancellation of the reductions, which supports the thesis of the coaster rather than that of the bug.

Sony fixes a first problem with the new PlayStation Plus

The concern noted by the first users and the first users was real: Sony asked them, in a way, to return the money he had saved during a promotion. Concretely, the one who had acquired a year of PlayStation Plus at 50.99 € (minus 25%) had to pay 49 € to switch to PlayStation Plus Extra – against 40 € for the one who paid the normal price (59.99 €). A dubious commercial practice, quickly pointed out. Good news: we won’t suffer from it when the new PlayStation Plus launches in Europe, scheduled for June 23.

However, Asian gamers highlighted two other issues with PlayStation Plus:

  • A catalog far from satisfactory in terms of quantity;
  • The impossibility of subscribing for the period of one’s choice to a superior formula.

The second point is stated in the official FAQ: “ You will be billed pro rata for the remaining time on your existing subscription depending on the desired tier. For example, if you purchased a 12-month subscription five months ago (and therefore have seven months left), you will need to pay pro-rated to upgrade your remaining seven months to the desired plan. It is particularly penalizing for those who have accumulated several years of subscription (taking advantage of discounts). To switch from simple PlayStation Plus (€59.99 per year) to PlayStation Plus Premium (€119.99), the bill can be steep in the event of a very long subscription. Someone who is subscribed for 10 years must pay 720 € at once (119.99 – 59.99 = 60, 60*12 = 720).
