While the new Playstation Plus formula is due to enter France on June 23, 2022, Sony has decided to gradually withdraw PS Plus subscription cards from the stores of partner retailers.
As you may know, the Playstation Plus must return in a brand new formula from June 23, 2022 in France. This new service, resulting from the merger between the current PS Plus and Playstation Now, will offer three separate offers.
The PS Plus Essential takes over the operation of the previous PS Plus, while the PS Plus Extra and Premium offer various advantages, such as access to a vast selection of PS4 and PS5 games, not to mention more 350 games from the PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP catalogs.
Of course, prices will inevitably increase with prices set at €8.99/month for the PS Plus Essential, €13.99/month for the PS Plus Extra and €16.99/month for the PS Plus Premium. Gold, many players hoped to be able to use physical cards to pay for their subscription.
A few weeks before the launch of the new PS Plus, Sony had already complicated things, since many many players were unable to activate their PS Plus subscription (the old version) via a prepaid card. What suggest that Sony had simply disabled PSN cards for the arrival of PS Plus 2.0.
Sony pulls PS Plus prepaid cards from stores
After some time, Sony said it was a temporary bug. Nevertheless, many gamers have speculated that this was a ploy by Sony to prevent gamers from buying cheaper subscriptions. And indeed, we have just learned from our colleagues at Eurogamer that Sony is starting to pull PS Plus prepaid cards from stores.
These cards, which allowed you to recharge your PS Plus subscription for a period of one, three or twelve months, have disappeared from the shelves. In the UK, Amazon, Game, Smyths or Argos no longer offer them for sale. Instead of that, they urge users to opt for gift cards for the PS Store instead (Editor’s note: these cards allow you to recharge your PSN digital wallet).
On the Playstation France site, a Playstation Plus Gift Cards tab is always present. However, just click on it to be automatically redirected to Playstation Store gift cards (which range from €25 to €100).
Players forced to pay their subscription at full price?
A question now arises: Does Sony plan to launch new prepaid cards adapted to the new PS Plus formula in the future? ? It must be said that the manufacturer risks causing confusion. With three different offers, and the possibility of opting for one, three or twelve months of subscriptions, users should choose between 9 different cards.
If this is not the case, users will have no choice but to pay their subscription at full price from the Sony site. The solution to save money could be to find Playstation Store gift cards on sale, for fill their digital wallet at a lower cost and use their credits to pay for their PS Plus subscription.
