As you will have understood, to play old productions released on consoles prior to the PS4 from your PS5, you will have to go to the cash register… This grouping and this new price list will mark the end of the subscription Playstation Now as it currently existsmeaning that PC players will necessarily have to subscribe to the PS+ to access this service. Several productions first party will be included in these new tiers, but new day one releases will not, needless to say, this is nothing like the Xbox Game Pass for once. Here’s what Jim Ryan said about the PlayStation-Blog :

Since the launch of PlayStation Plus in 2010, SIE has been at the forefront of innovation in subscription gaming services. We were thrilled to offer the first console subscription service that included an updated library of games thanks to PlayStation Plus. With PlayStation Now, we were also the first to launch a console game streaming service.

Today, we are happy to officially announce changes to our two subscription services. In June, we will merge PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now into an all-new PlayStation Plus subscription service, which will give customers around the world more choice through three subscription tiers.

We have set ourselves the goal of offer quality content, chosen with care, but also diversified games*.

The new Extra and Premium tiers represent a major evolution for PlayStation Plus. With these tiers, we ensure that the hundreds of games we offer include the best content that sets us apart. At launch, we plan to include games like Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal. We work closely with the creative developers at PlayStation Studios and our third-party partners to include some of the best gaming experiences, as well as an ever-expanding library. We will be bringing you new details of the games we will be offering as part of the new PlayStation Plus service very soon.

When the new PlayStation Plus service becomes available, PlayStation Now will be integrated into it and will therefore no longer be available as a standalone service. PlayStation Now subscribers will upgrade to PlayStation Plus Premium at no additional cost when the new service becomes available.

Since this is a major event, we plan to roll out the new PlayStation Plus region by region. In June, we will launch the service in several markets in Asia, then North America, Europe and finally the rest of the world in which PlayStation Plus is offered. Most PlayStation Network territories are expected to have access to the new PlayStation Plus subscription gaming service by the end of the first half of 2022. We also plan to expand the cloud streaming benefit to other markets. We will give you more details on this at a later date.

The changes to our subscription services are based on over 25 years of expertise in innovation and video games. They are part of a continuity aimed at developing our network services to meet the needs of our customers. With the all-new PlayStation Plus, we want to deliver a compelling subscription gaming service, featuring hand-picked content created by our exclusive PlayStation Studios team and our third-party partners. The enhanced PlayStation Plus will allow our fans to experience more content than ever before and strengthen the bonds of the PlayStation community through shared experiences.

Get a preview of the new PlayStation Plus subscription service today. We’ll provide more details closer to the service launch date. Stay tuned.

In addition, Jim Ryan gave an interview at Gamesindustryin which he explains the reason why the games PlayStation Studios will not be integrated day one in the subscription.

We have the impression of being in a good virtuous cycle with the studios, where investment is synonymous with success, which allows even more investment, which provides even more success. We love this cycle and we think our players love this cycle.

[En termes de] putting our own games on this service, or one of our services, as they come out…as you well know, that’s not a route we’ve taken in the past. And that’s not a road we’re going to take with this new service. We believe that if we did this with the games we make at PlayStation Studios, this virtuous circle would be broken. The level of investment we need to make in our studios would not be possible, and we believe that the ripple effect on the quality of the games we make would not be something gamers want.

So, do these new subscription levels convince you? In any case, the classic formula is still available and you can buy a map PS+ from €8.99 on Amazon.
