PlayStation Portal has become a real portable console

Only a few months after its release, the PlayStation Portal has already been hacked. What exactly did he do? You’ll see, it’s quite special.

In November 2023, we welcomed PlayStation Portal. A screen combined with a PS5 controller, which is actually a remote play device for the next-gen machine. Therefore, you must have a – good – internet connection, and only via WiFi. In our columns, we gave the machine a score of 7/10, even if it “remains” only a playback device for Remote Play. Anyway, against all expectations, it has already been hacked by two people for a very specific purpose.

The hacked PlayStation Portal is a real portable console

Andy Nguyen and his colleague Calle Svensson are both employees at Google. Together, they undertook a far from easy task: hacking PlayStation Portal. They managed to find the flaw, and did not hesitate to share it on social networks. To be more precise, they installed on the PPSSPP console, an emulator which grants the possibility of playing PSP games. “ After more than a month of work, PPSSPP is running natively on PlayStation Portal. Yes, we hacked it », We can read on X (formerly Twitter).

They clearly didn’t waste any time. For your information, PPSSPP is currently available on PC and Android, and it has an excellent reputation. It is seen as one of the best PSP emulators that exist, which is how successful it is. In doing so, the PlayStation Portal becomes a real portable console that frees itself from the PS5. Even if we’re not inviting you to hack anything, it’s still quite impressive to have achieved such a result. That said, don’t expect to get your hands on it.

Andy Nguyen emphasizes this well: it is not available to everyone. They have no plans to deploy it for the general public, far from it. Moreover, he says it himself, there is still work to be done despite a promising first image. On this subject, we should have a PPSSPP video on PlayStation Portal shortly. Given the success of the announcement, the user will perhaps present a demonstration this weekend, although this is not yet certain. To be continued.

Playful reactions

On X, reactions from the community were quick to be heard. And they are rather positive. “Interesting”, “the true meaning of the word portable”, “now it has value”, “we appreciate your service”, we can read in particular. When reading the messages, there is something that jumps out at you. Obviously, the fact that PlayStation Portal isn’t a true “portable console” is a problem for some people. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard this kind of criticism, and it certainly won’t be the last. In any case, we’ll see this weekend if a video awaits us.
