PlayStation: Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, Silent Hill, here are the big games to watch this year

On the occasion of its first State of Play of the year, PlayStation presented us with the big games coming soon to PS5 and the PS VR2.

While 2023 was rather calm for Sony’s gaming branch, with the exception of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and free DLC for God of War: Ragnarokthis first live event tends to reassure fans about what is in store for 2024. We therefore present to you the titles that we believe are worth watching in this regard.

Stellar Blade

To kick off the big announcements, the State of Play began with Stellar Bladea single-player action-adventure title developed by South Korean studio Shift Up, announced for the very first time in 2019. Having remained fairly discreet since then, the game finally presented itself with a proper gameplay sequence.

In a post-apocalyptic Earth, we play Eve, a fighter whose objective is to repel an extraterrestrial threat that has forced Humanity to flee. The synopsis, the artistic direction and the very nervous gameplay are very reminiscent of Nier: Automata, and it is certainly not to displease us. Originally expected in 2023, the return to Earth is finally confirmed for April 26, 2024, exclusively on PS5.

Rise of the Ronin

After the solid Souls-like Wo Long: Fallen DynastyTeam Ninja is not idle and is preparing us this time Rise of the Ronin, currently expected exclusively on PS5 on March 22. As its name suggests, this adventure will take us to 19th century Japan, as the West begins to invade the country, at the controls of a Ronin.

In many aspects, the game reminds us of Ghost of Tsushima, but at a much more advanced historical period. Flying aircraft, firearms and brick buildings will be on the program in an open world action-adventure game. This new gameplay sequence presents us with the great mobility offered by the game and visibly demanding combat. Our katana craves to rub against it.

Silent Hill: The Short Message

License silent Hill also stopped by during the State of Play to present two projects to us. The first is baptized The Short Message, where we play Anita, looking for her friend Maya in a block of apartments that doesn’t look the most welcoming. Armed with her trusty smartphone, she will have to brave the dangers of this terrifying place in pursuit of her quest… now and for free!

This is just another way for fans to wait for the remake of the legendary Silent Hill 2 developed by Bloober Team. He also took advantage of the opportunity to present his combat system (which is very reminiscent of that of Resident Evil 4) in a short video.

Until Dawn

To stay on the theme of horror, here is an announcement which is not necessarily a surprise, but which remains pleasant to see. The deliciously terrifying Until Dawndeveloped by Supermassive Games in 2015 on PS4, returns to us in better shape than ever, this time on PS5 and PC.

We will thus be able to enjoy its gloomy story as much as possible and make heartbreaking choices in this breathtaking slasher in more beautiful (and gory) guise thanks to Unreal Engine 5. Unfortunately, no date has yet been set, but its release will be planned for later this year. Let us also remember that a film adaptation is also in the works.

Metro Awakening VR

After the excellent Exodus, Metro returns to us not on consoles and PC, but in a version dedicated to VR headsets. Metro Awakening, still with 4A Games at the helm, intends to offer all the deliciously oppressive atmosphere of this post-apocalyptic FPS license while adding the immersion of virtual reality. The story is intended to be a prequel to the previous opuses.

This is perhaps a title that will make the undecided want to purchase a PS VR2, as the device does not currently have a sufficiently convincing catalog. If once again we do not have a precise release date, Metro Awakening VR is in any case planned for this year, on the PS VR2 as on Meta Quest 2 and 3, as well as on VR headsets requiring a PC.

Little gift from Kojima: Death Stranding 2

We’re cheating a little with this highlight of the first State of Play of the year, since its release is scheduled for 2025. However, it’s difficult to miss this long and intriguing video presented by Kojima Productions. As recent leaks have suggested, Death Stranding 2 will bear the subtitle well On the Beach.

One might expect: the second opus of Kojima’s latest baby exudes mystery and strangeness. There we find Sam (Norman Reedus) and Fragile (Léa Seydoux), as well as Higgs (Troy Baker), who seems to have been reincarnated and to have found a passion for the electric guitar. The gameplay also seems to remain focused on travel, delivery and the construction of structures and vehicles to facilitate its journeys. This is to connect other parts of the world to combat the Death Stranding.

In this regard, the fights seem to be gaining in dynamism, with a much more extensive arsenal than mainly urine-based grenades. However, we will have something to see ahead of its expected release next year on PS5.

The indescribable Hideo Kojima also made an appearance at the very end of State of Play to announce that he is working on a new generation game in the action-espionage genre, initiated by a certain Metal Gearcurrently bearing the code name Physint. The man will therefore be very busy in the years to come, since he is also at the head of a project in partnership with Microsoft, called OD.

If we hoped to see Final Fantasy VII Rebirth During this State of Play, however, you will have to show a little patience. The next highly anticipated title from Square Enix will indeed be entitled to its own live event, scheduled for February 6. So we’re marking this date on our Buster Sword calendar!
