Sony’s second VR headset, the PlayStation VR2, whose design was revealed last February and which did not yet have a fixed release date, should finally arrive next year according to a display industry expert .
It may not be for this year… After revealing its plans for the successor to its first VR headset last January, followed by its design a month later, Sony had not announced a precise launch date for the second iteration of its headset, the PlayStation VR2. We could therefore have hoped to be entitled to a release before the end of this year.
A launch planned for 2023
However, according to Ross Young, specialist in the screen industry, the arrival of the PlayStation VR2 should rather be done by 2023. Sony would therefore miss the holiday season while according to the analyst, a considerable increase in sales of helmets VR would be expected this year, with orders for VR screens doubling in 2022. This may have been their original launch plan or it may have been a delay in production, but nothing is certain.
What’s new?
What is certain is that this PlayStation VR2 designed to work with the PS5 will have two very high resolution OLED screens (we are talking about more than 800 dpi) with a definition of 2000 x 2040 pixels per eye. Players will be able to enjoy 4K HDR images at up to 120 fps and with a wider field of view that will increase to 110 degrees (compared to 100 degrees originally).
The helmet will also be able to track the eyes for an even more immersive experience, the image can for example be optimized according to the direction of the gaze in order to offer more precise renderings. The PS VR2 will communicate with the console via a simple USB-C cable and will benefit from 3D audio, Bluetooth 5.1 as well as new haptic vibrations that we hope will be as precise as those of the DualSense controller.
Sony isn’t the only brand planning a new headset. Apple is also in line to deliver its very first virtual reality headset in 2023 with an arguably more user-centric approach.
