The Paris City Hall has communicated a lot about cars and motorized two-wheeled vehicles, but has forgotten one detail in its recommendations: bicycles. Of course, the Paris 2024 lanes are mainly motorway axes or dependent on the Paris ring road, which does not concern them. But the decree that formalizes the Paris 2024 lanes still lists 53 Parisian squares, streets and avenues that will be part of the system.

In these streets where Paris 2024 lanes have appeared, either on the left or on the right, it is forbidden for a bicycle to circulate there.. The fine incurred is the same as for motorists or a scooter: €135. The only categories of vehicles authorized have been confirmed on the AnticiperLesJeux website:

  • vehicles of persons accredited by Paris 2024
  • taxis and public transport vehicles
  • vehicles intended to facilitate the transport of people with reduced mobility
  • emergency and security vehicles

To remove any ambiguity about the term “vehicle,” the site also specifies: “ Bicycles and scooters are not allowed to circulate there. ” Clearly, we will have to do things differently and in particular, stay on cycle paths.

Where are these Paris 2024 bike-free routes?

The first paths that could have been used by bikes and that are on an Olympic route are on the Bercy side. This entrance to Paris is already not very bike-friendly and cyclists do not often use it, but if you see a nice empty path in front of you, you will have to pay attention to its markings: it is not a new Rivoli in the making, it is a Paris 2024 axis.

The second major set of Olympic routes is located in the west of Paris and is traditionally more frequented by bicycles. The area includes Olympic sites, but also very classic routes, since these are mainly business, tourist and institutional districts. You will have to be vigilant and avoid the road as much as possible, favor the lanes reserved for cycles and not take the rightmost or leftmost lanes, marked on the ground or identified as being “Paris 2024” lanes.

Do not confuse Voies Paris 2024 and Itinéraires Paris 2024

Semantics matters. If the Paris 2024 lanes (in gray on the maps) are lanes reserved for certain vehicles and therefore prohibited to others, the Paris 2024 itineraries are normal streets, signposted to make it easier for users to find their way. Some cycle paths now also have pink markings, to identify that they lead to Olympic sites.
