(Boursier.com) — Plug Power Inc won an order for 100 MW of electrolysers from Uniper, an international leader in the energy sector, as part of its H2Maasvlakte project. Plug’s electrolyser technology will enable Uniper to produce green hydrogen from 2026 on the site of the Maasvlakte power plant in the port of Rotterdam. The total capacity of electrolyzers installed on the site will reach 500 MW by 2030 at the latest.

The Port of Rotterdam area, which includes the Maasvlakte, is the largest carbon-emitting industrial hub in the Netherlands. In 2021, this area emitted 23.4 million tonnes of CO2. Decarbonizing this area alone would contribute significantly to the Netherlands’ overall goal of reaching net zero by 2050.

“Uniper is committed to drastically reducing its emissions,” said Allard Castelein, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam. “We are very pleased with the steps Uniper has taken. As a port authority, we support, stimulate and help businesses in Rotterdam to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement in many ways, including by putting in place infrastructure such as a hydrogen pipeline network in time”.
