Podcast “So techt Germany”: Startup organizes digital legacy

Uwe Böhler develops the digital legacy. He is the founder and CEO of Cloud of Legacy. With his startup, the former manager wants to reinvent himself as a career changer in his mid-50s.

It was certainly not a corona depression that gave Uwe Böhler the idea for the start-up. But because of the amount of news during Corona, “one became more aware of life and mortality,” says Böhler. During the Corona period, the idea turned into a vision: the digital legacy. The highlight of his idea is that you can not only manage your digital access, but also store emotions. The user has the opportunity to “create his emotional and informative digital legacy,” explains the founder of Cloud of Legacy. What was spectacular about the founding was “to address the people that you need for such a product”. He is not a programmer or technical developer. Therefore, the term career changer is certainly correct, but “I have the management experience of how to build and develop products,” explains the former RTL manager.

In our culture, death is still a taboo or stigmatized topic, says Uwe Böhler.

Convincing people of the product was easy. “In the end, I chose those who were really passionate about the topic,” says Böhler. That made it easier for him to get started. Finding good technical teams is very easy these days. It is no longer necessary to rummage through telephone books, “LinkedIn enables a very good search,” Böhler explains his approach. He spoke to teams from Germany, Poland, Romania and Ukraine and ultimately decided on the Romanian team. “In terms of experience and conviction on the subject, they scored well with me,” the CEO explains his decision.

“Cloud of Legacy is a tribute to life”

“Death is still a taboo topic in our culture,” says Böhler on the question of marketing. This is also due to the fact that there are no easy starting points – “so far,” says Böhler. In the end, the Cloud of Legacy aims at the moment of death, but “it’s actually a homage to one’s own life,” he explains. Because you look at it yourself: What do I actually want to leave behind? A final message or final words. You don’t just write this on paper or put it on a stick, but it would then be automatically sent to these people.

Digitization offers a good opportunity to keep documents such as wills safe. As an example, Böhler mentions the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley, where there may also be handwritten copies of wills “that can no longer be found”. A digital copy would then be a good alternative.

In the new episode of “So techt Deutschland”, Uwe Böhler explains the importance of data security in addition to quality, how far Germany has come with the topic of digital inheritance and whether his idea also works abroad.
