Podcast. Will the electric car get us out of oil?

The European Parliament voted in June 2022 to end the sale of thermal vehicles in 2035 with one priority: the development of electric vehicles to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport. In France, the individual car represents for 16% of our emissions, a considerable weight.

Is the electric car a miracle solution to get out of our dependence on oil? Is it, conversely, more polluting than the gasoline car? What place does the issue of metals and rare earths occupy in batteries? Can this jeopardize the energy transition, for electric cars but also for renewable energies?

Emmanuel Hache is an economist at IFP Energies nouvelles and he is also research director and professor at the Institute of International and Strategic Relations (IRIS). He is the author of Geopolitics of energies (Editions Eyrolles, 2022).
