Nils Petersen from SC Freiburg is retiring after this season. The striker announced this on his Instagram account. The 34-year-old is the most accurate substitute in Bundesliga history and also the club’s record goalscorer.
Former national soccer player Nils Petersen from SC Freiburg will end his career after this season. “After almost 16 years of professional football, I’m hanging up my shoes at the end of the season with a heavy heart,” said the 34-year-old on Instagram, adding poetically: “Everything that has an end also had a beginning. And a new beginning It’s not the end soon. You’ll hear from me. I promise.”
Petersen has been playing for Breisgau since 2015 and has scored 89 goals in 242 games so far. The centre-forward also previously played for Bayern Munich, Werder Bremen and Energie Cottbus in the Bundesliga. The 34-year-old is the most accurate substitute in Bundesliga history. In 2018 he was in the provisional World Cup squad of national coach Joachim Löw, but there were only two friendlies in the DFB dress. He has made 31 appearances across all competitions this season. However, he was no longer part of the permanent staff this season.
“Now I will invest everything again so that I can then say: You should go when it’s most beautiful,” said Petersen, who is fighting for international places with Freiburg at the end of the season and in the DFB Cup quarter-finals next Tuesday with the German record champions is a guest.
