Pokémon: is there an error on the evolution of two creatures?

Is the mysterious evolution of the Insect-type “Pokémon” Butterflies and Aeromites explained by a simple error by the game developers?

Both featured in the list of the original 151 Pokémon included in the red and blue versions of the famous video game, Butterfree and Aeromite are also two of the most famous Bug-type Pokémon. Yet a mystery has surrounded these creatures for many years, and a theory could finally provide an answer to this long unanswered question: have these two Pokémon been accidentally reversed?

We know Butterfree is the evolution of Chrysacier, itself evolution of Chenipan, one of the first Pokémon appearing at the start of the game in the Jade Forest. If the link between the first two Pokémon is quite obvious, Butterfree nevertheless marks a real break with its two previous incarnations, physically resembling neither one nor the other.

A very similar observation applies to Aéromite, an evolution of the adorable Mimitos. Therefore, how to explain that these two Pokémon do not resemble the creatures of which they are the evolution and that, even stranger, these have strange points of resemblance with the respective basic Pokémon of each one?

If no official answer has ever been provided to this mystery, many Internet users put forward the theory of a simple human error. A blunder made by the game developers could simply explain that Butterfree and Aeromite were reversed when designing the Pokédex; by exchanging the place of the two Pokémon, the evolutions of Chrysacier and Mimitos indeed seem much more coherent to us!
