Pokémon: The Magikarp that is worth gold!

The trend of Pokémon cards continues to grow and it is possible to find more and more extra rare cards that sell for astronomical prices. Recently, a “collector” found himself in prison after taking advantage of state aid to buy a holographic Charizard for $ 57,789. Today, it’s a Pokémon card Magikarp that is talking about it, because it recently sold for the price of $125,000more than double than the Trickster’s Charizard.

What makes it rare?

In the 90s a contest took place in Japan during a Pokémon Snap event. The children participating in this famous contest had to take pictures of the game on Nintendo64. The 10 prettiest images were adapted into Pokémon cards, which were given out in 20 copies to each winner. For more than 20 years, these 20 cards have remained in the shadowsuntil some have the good idea to sell some.

What also makes this Pokémon Snap card so special is that it is the first ever to be sold and rated by rating company PSA. In February 2021, a similar card had sold $66,100. You can see the two Magikarp cards in the video below.

The YouTuber Smpratte showed this famous card on video, although it is not known how he was able to obtain it. According to him, it would be by a “longtime friend and business partner”. Smpratte described this card as the “rarest Pokemon card ever made”. Given that the card is over twenty years old and the result of a single event, this is understandable.

Other much more expensive cards

Its price of 125,000 dollars makes the Magikarp card the 6th most expensive in the worldafter :

  • A holographic first edition of Lugia – Neo Genesis at $144,300
  • Japanese Holographic Kangarox Promo Card $150,100
  • Galaxy Star Hologram Blastoise at $360,000
  • Charizard first holographic edition at $369,000
  • A 1998 Pikachu Illustrator promotional holographic card $375,000

The Magikarp therefore still has a little way to go before taking first place in the standings, although he is not to be ashamed of his competitors.

A 31-year-old American was arrested and sentenced to prison for having taken advantage of COVID-19 aid from the state to buy… a Pokémon card!
