Police helicopter found him – hiker fell 150 meters to his death in Tyrol

Sad result of a search operation in Wängle in Ausserfern, Tyrol: The crew of a police helicopter was only able to rescue a missing German alpinist (43) dead on Sunday. The man may have fallen more than 150 meters on the Schneidspitze on Saturday.

On Saturday morning around 10:10 a.m., the hiker sent his family a video message in which he explained that he had to stop just below the summit because of the prevailing conditions on the Schneidspitze. When he still wasn’t back in Germany that evening, his relatives filed a missing person’s report with the German police. They informed their Tyrolean colleagues on Sunday, who then found the missing person’s car in the parking lot of the Höfen mountain railway. As a result, the Libelle police helicopter took off on a search flight shortly afterwards. Evidence points to a crash. After a short time there was sad certainty: the crew discovered the German’s body in the steep terrain on the eastern slope of the Schneidspitze just below the summit. Based on the evidence, the police assume that the 43-year-old slipped on a steep snow field and subsequently fell around 150 meters.
