Green Party politician attacked with hammer

The migration representative of the Berlin Greens faction reports a right-wing radical attack. A man with a hammer breaks into Jian Omar’s constituency office and insults him as a “foreigner.” The German-Kurd remains unhurt.

The Berlin Green MP Jian Omar says he was attacked and racially insulted by someone with a hammer in his constituency office in Moabit. He did not suffer any physical injuries. “I have filed a complaint,” the German-Kurdish politician said on news service X that evening.

Because of the political motivation of the crime and the incitement of the people, the police also informed the state security and began an investigation. A passer-by intervened and stood by him. “Even if the political mood is heated, there is no justification for violence and verbal attacks of this kind,” wrote the politician. The police initially did not confirm the incident when asked in the evening.

The leaders of the Green Party in the House of Representatives, Bettina Jarasch and Werner Graf, condemned the incident. “The attack with Hammer shows that we live in a climate of hatred that we must all confront,” they said. “Fortunately, everyone remained physically uninjured.” Omar is the spokesperson for migration, participation and flight for the Green Party. He has been campaigning for democracy, human rights and minority rights in the Middle East for years, as stated on the group’s website.
