Shortly before 1:50 a.m., the report came in that a shot had been fired on Anternstrasse in Niederbipp and a man had been injured, the Bern canton police said.

A seriously injured man was found lying on the ground there. Despite rescue measures by third parties, the police and later the rescue service, the man died on the spot.

According to the information, another man who had a gunshot wound to his leg asked for help there. The alleged perpetrator, a 48-year-old Portuguese, was arrested in a residential building, it is said. A firearm was seized from him. He is in custody.

According to the police, the background to the crime is still unclear. Further investigations are in progress. The authorities initially gave no information on the identity of the fatality. There are indications, but the formal identification is still pending.
