This is certainly not the most crucial point of the Beauvau de la Sécurité, this major consultation, launched in February, supposed to bring the police closer to the population … But the idea of modernizing the police uniform, launched on March 12 by the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, in a call for projects sent to twenty-four French fashion schools, has been fueling grassroots creativity for a few days, especially on social networks. According to the unions, this change of wardrobe is a demand made for several months to improve the image of the police in the population.
In his letter, the minister therefore invites the students to “revisit” the uniform of the police officers, created in 2003 by the Balenciaga house, to “Give it a more modern appearance, more in tune with the needs of the field and the realities of society”. The rendering is scheduled for the end of April to, in theory, allow officials to parade in this new outfit on July 14. A deadline that would be impossible to meet, according to the students of several schools approached. “It is not during this mandate that we will see big changes”, already warns David Le Bars, secretary general of the Union of National Police Commissioners (SCPN).

According to the very brief specifications sent to schools, entitled “expression of needs for a style study”, it is essentially a question of “Modify the design of one or two emblematic pieces of the outfit”.
