Police violence in the USA – charges against five ex-cops for the death of an African American – News

  • In the US state of Tennessee, five former police officers have been charged.
  • Prosecutors accuse the men of being responsible for the death of a 29-year-old African American man in early January.
  • It is feared that the case could lead to violent protests. US President Joe Biden has therefore addressed the population.

The five also African-American men are said to have used so much violence during a traffic stop that the controlled man later died. After the incident, they were dismissed from the police force. They used excessive force, did not intervene and did not provide assistance, police said.

29-year-old Tire Nichols was pulled over by police in Memphis on January 7 for “reckless driving.” According to a family lawyer, he was beaten by emergency services for several minutes and later died in hospital. An autopsy report revealed that the 29-year-old suffered profuse bleeding from severe beatings.

Biden: Violent protests are unacceptable

US President Joe Biden wrote in a statement that the anger at the act was understandable, but violent protests were unacceptable. Demonstrations should remain peaceful. But one cannot ignore the fact that black people are disproportionately affected by deadly confrontations with the police.

Biden also tweeted his condolences to Nichols’ family and promised a prompt, full, and transparent investigation. Lawyers for the victim’s family denounced racist crackdowns by US police against black people in the country.

Video footage of the crime is scheduled to be released tonight (local time). As in the past, demonstrations are expected in similar cases.
