“Populism flourishes when people feel they are not allowed to have a say, when they feel injustice, and when they perceive a lack of will or inability among those with power to respond to individual and social grievances,” explains another study author, social scientist Julia Weiss. The way teenagers use social media should not be underestimated either, as populist parties in particular are increasingly using these channels. This could reinforce the existing dynamic, the study says.
