Poorly equipped – Drachenwand: “Completely finished” in mountain distress

An inexperienced German (23) was rescued from the Drachenwand via ferrata in Upper Austria on Thursday. She was completely exhausted.

“She was in really bad shape. Nobody has ever been so exhausted,” says Andreas Widlroither, head of operations at the Mondseerland mountain rescue service. On Thursday around 2 p.m., a 23-year-old German from Hanover set off with her boyfriend (26). They chose the Drachenwand via ferrata as their tour. “They completely underestimated the climb, only read the Google reviews on the internet. They were also very poorly equipped. They wore gym pads with almost no profile, no helmet and didn’t have a headlamp with them,” Widlroither shakes his head. Climbers helped An attentive climber (42) from Neumarkt am Wallersee noticed the clumsy couple already on the climb. When he met the two again on the descent, he helped them the last few meters up and dialed the emergency number there. The woman had to go to the hospital. “She was supported by two mountain rescuers. In the valley, her condition continued to deteriorate and she had to go to the hospital. She said that she hardly ever does any sport,” says the head of operations. And on Wednesday, too, the help of mountain rescuers was required on the Jainzenberg in Bad Ischl. Two locals got lost in the dark, and one complained of severe foot pain.
